Excellent, wish I had taken the time to research this several months ago. For me it was a stuck job on a Cannon MP500 soaking 99% CPU. Agree with the commment that silence is golden, took less than 10 secs for the fan to stop.
Thanks,
Andy

aaaahhh, silence...sweet silence...i thought i lost you. thank you so much.

i spend a whole day researching my "high user cpu usage for no reason" and ended up with - nothing, but the feeling that i am not alone with this phenomenon. after reading the 43th post about this problem, disabling this thingie and that service, searching for malware and loosing my patience i recognized that the activity monitor doesn´t show all processes by default...
anyways, its a shame that apple, if they are not able to fix that bug with canon printer drivers, doesn't at least communicate about this serious problem and try to help...

same for me... cannon i960 and iantivirus were killing my CPU. first i got rid of iantivirus and the fan noise was still there, then i went after the printer, i couldn't kill the printer in the activity monitor, i had to kill everything in the print queue .. the fan went off! now lets see how long the battery lasts! YEY!! my computer is 2 years old so i was considering an upgrade, well if this works i think i'll get an external hard drive instead and ride this puppy till the wheels come off!

Cool. That helped a lot. I was at 45% CPU usage with a one page print! Using Epson 3800 on MacPro with 2 x 3 GHZ Dual Core Intel. After deleting print job, now it's using 3%. Crazy and weird the way that works.

Thank you so much!!! I solved the problem in a matter of seconds thanks to you! It's refreshing to know that even when Apple don't know the problem, there are still dedicated users who figure it out and spread the knowledge. Much respect to you :-)

Worked for me, too. I have a Canon i960. It sure seems like the idiot who wrote a printer driver that does millions of operations per second while _waiting_ needs to fix their code. This is a bug, but I don't know whether Canon or Apple needs to fix their code, or both. Obviously a print queue should either wait for an interrupt or poll every few seconds to see if the printer is available--not crank on the CPU endlessly.
